On average, these cars carry 78.2 hp per 1000 lb, or 12.6 lb per hp. Naturally aspirated models account for 48 percent and turbocharged entries 32 percent, while 28 percent are manual. Gasoline power remains dominant at 82 percent, with electric at 8 percent and hybrids adding another 8 percent across hybrid and plug-in hybrid entries.

The fact that all-wheel drive accounts for 43 percent of the field helps explain why some cars convert their power into quicker starts more effectively. Well-geared and lightweight entries can punch above their power, while heavier cars may need more output just to keep pace.

The decade medians show a clear long-term drop in 0-60 mph times. The 1940s sit at 10, the 1950s at 10.2, and the 1960s improve to 8.8 before the 1970s move back to 9.8. From there, the trend turns steadily quicker: 8.5 in the 1980s, 7.1 in the 1990s, and 6.1 in the 2000s.
The biggest modern gains appear in the most recent decades. The median falls to 5.3 in the 2010s and 4.7 in the 2020s, which is the quickest decade median in the set. With 307 entries, the 2020s are also the largest decade represented, showing that sub-5-second capability has become far more common in this power band.

The fastest turbocharged and all-wheel-drive entry is the 2024 Porsche 911 at 2.3 seconds, while the fastest naturally aspirated model is the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette at 2.8. The quickest rear-wheel-drive model is the 2016 McLaren 570 at 2.7, the fastest manual is the 2009 Ariel Atom at 2.9, and the quickest front-wheel-drive record is the 2025 Hyundai Elantra at 4.7.
