The decade medians show a clear long-term drop in 0-60 mph times, even if early results are uneven because the oldest decades have few entries. The 1940s sit at 10, the 1950s at 8.6, the 1960s at 13.4, and the 1970s at 9.9. By the 1990s, the median had moved down to 5.8.
From there, the pace of improvement becomes more consistent. The 2000s median falls to 4.3, the 2010s to 4.1, and the 2020s to 3.6. That progression suggests modern roadsters are gaining acceleration through better traction, transmissions, and power delivery, not simply bigger output figures.
Records & Superlatives
The record set is unusually broad. The fastest naturally aspirated and rear-wheel-drive entry is the 2024 Porsche 718 Boxster at 2.8 seconds, while the quickest turbocharged car is the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT at 3.3. Electric power brings the 2024 MG Cyberster to 3.1, and the manual benchmark belongs to the 2009 Ariel Atom at 2.9.
At the top overall, the all-wheel-drive and automatic records are both held by the 2026 Mercedes-AMG SL63 at 2.5 seconds.
