The 1970s group posts a median of 12.4 seconds, the 2010s cut that to 5.1 seconds, and the 2020s reduce it further to 3.6 seconds. The direction is consistent: newer liftbacks are markedly quicker than earlier examples in this body style.
That improvement lines up with the modern makeup of the field, which is concentrated in recent years and heavily weighted toward all-wheel drive, electrified powertrains, and high average output. With 13 entries from the 2020s, the latest decade also has the strongest influence on what current liftback performance looks like.

The record holders show how widely results can vary within one body style. The quickest electric liftback is the 2021 Tesla Model S at 1.98 seconds, while the fastest hybrid is the 2025 Porsche Panamera at 2.5. Among combustion setups, the fastest turbocharged entry is the 2021 Audi RS 5 at 3.6, the supercharged benchmark is the 2016 Audi A7 at 4.7, and the naturally aspirated mark is the 2018 Buick Regal at 5.4.
Drivetrain and transmission records reinforce the same pattern. All-wheel drive leads at 1.98, rear-wheel drive stands at 4.9, front-wheel drive at 5.1, the quickest manual also at 5.1, and the quickest automatic at 2.5.
