Dodge Charger Performance Overview

Across 58 independently verified tests spanning 1968 to 2026, the Dodge Charger traces a performance arc from big-block muscle coupe to modern four-door sedan and now battery-electric liftback. Early B-body cars established the template with 426 Hemi and 440 Magnum V8s rated from 375 to 425 hp; the 1968 R/T Hemi Coupe reached 4.8 seconds to 60 mph. The 1971 B-body II SE Coupe slowed to 6.5 seconds as the first era wound down.

When the name returned on the L-body platform in the 1980s, output fell to 146-175 hp and turbocharged four-cylinder performance ranged from the 1985 Shelby 3-door Hatchback at 7.9 seconds to the 1987 Shelby GLHS 3-door Hatchback at 6.7. The LX revival in 2006 restored rear-drive V8 performance, with the 2008 SRT8 Sedan matching 4.8 seconds, before the LD generation broadened the range from Pentastar V6 and 392 HEMI models to supercharged Hellcat variants.
