Tesla Model S Performance Overview
Tesla’s Model S performance record spans 2012 to 2022, covered here by 27 verified tests across 10 model years. Throughout that run it remained an all-electric liftback, with output rising from 302 hp in early single- and dual-motor versions to 1,020 hp in the Plaid. Early benchmarks established the car’s pace quickly: the 2012 Signature Performance 85 reached 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, while the 2014 60 sat at the opposite end of the range at 5.5 seconds.
Mid-cycle development brought successive drops in acceleration times as battery and motor performance improved. The 2014 P85D cut 0-60 to 3.3 seconds, the 2015 P90D Ludicrous reduced it further to 2.6, and the 2017 P100D Ludicrous+ reached 2.28 seconds. Those gains were matched by quarter-mile progress, culminating later in a 9.25-second pass at 152.6 mph.
By the end of the production span, the Plaid defined the model’s current position in this dataset. The 2021 Plaid on a prepped raceway surface recorded the all-time best 1.98-second 0-60 time and the quickest quarter-mile, while the broader Model S average settled at 3.36 seconds to 60 and 11.55 seconds in the quarter-mile. Within this page’s coverage, the quickest current-era reference remains the 2021 Plaid’s 1.98 seconds.

How we verify Tesla Model S performance data
We include only independently published road-test results from automotive publications. Manufacturer-claimed 0–60 times are excluded unless clearly labeled. When multiple publications test the same Tesla Model S trim, each run is listed separately — weather, tires, surface, rollout, and instrumentation all affect results.
