This group spans 417 vehicles and centers on a fairly even drivetrain mix: AWD accounts for 39 percent, FWD 36 percent, and RWD 24 percent. Average output is 214 hp with 228 lb-ft, while average weight is 3352 lb and median weight is 3360 lb. That yields a typical power-to-weight picture of 63.1 hp per 1000 lb, or 15.7 lb per hp.
Forced induction is prominent but not exclusive. Turbocharged models make up 50 percent of the field, while naturally aspirated entries account for 34 percent. Manuals still have a meaningful presence at 39 percent, showing that quick 4-cylinder cars are not limited to one layout or transmission approach.

Gearing, tire grip, and how effectively a drivetrain applies torque matter just as much. AWD can improve launches, while lighter cars or models with shorter gearing can outperform heavier rivals with larger power figures. The decade medians show a clear long-term reduction in 0-60 mph times. The 1950s sit at 14.3 seconds, the 1960s at 15.1, then the 1970s drop to 11.4. From there the pattern keeps moving downward: 9.7 in the 1980s, 8.2 in the 1990s, and 7.2 in the 2000s.
The improvement continues in the largest modern cohorts. The 2010s post a median of 6.5 seconds across 128 vehicles, and the 2020s cut that to 5.8 across 139 vehicles. In this category, newer 4-cylinder cars have generally become quicker while also appearing in much greater numbers.
Records & Superlatives
The record holders show how broad this field is. Naturally aspirated honors go to the 2006 Caterham Seven at 3.6 seconds, and turbocharged honors go to the 2009 KTM X-Bow, also at 3.6. The quickest hybrid is the 2024 Mercedes-AMG C63 at 2.9, matching the supercharged 2009 Ariel Atom.
By layout, AWD, RWD, manual, and automatic records all stand at 2.9 seconds, while the fastest FWD entry is the 2025 Hyundai Elantra at 4.7 and the quickest CVT entry is the 2022 Lexus NX at 5.5. That spread shows launch traction and transmission type still shape the ceiling, especially outside AWD and lightweight RWD formats.
