The decade medians trace a clear long-term improvement. The 1940s sit at 10 seconds, the 1950s at 6.3, and the 1960s at 6.5. Performance then softened to 7.2 in the 1970s and 7.7 in the 1980s before dropping sharply to 5.2 in the 1990s.
From there, the category kept getting quicker: 4.2 in the 2000s, 4 in the 2010s, and 3.3 in the 2020s. In broad terms, newer twelve-cylinder cars combine better traction, transmissions, and power delivery to reach 60 mph far sooner than earlier generations.
Records & Superlatives
The record holders show how different solutions reach similar goals. The fastest naturally aspirated car is the 2019 Lamborghini Aventador at 2.5 seconds, while the turbocharged benchmark is the 2020 Bentley Bentayga at 3.1. The hybrid and all-wheel-drive marks both belong to the 2024 Lamborghini Revuelto at 2.2.
