About BMW i8

BMW is famous for producing fast performance cars and bikes. During February 2012, the new concept of “I” came into existence. Here “I” refers to the introduction of new and revolutionary range of electrically-powered cars to the market.

Many advanced and highlighting features have been incorporated in the new “I” version. BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car that has a 129 horsepower electric engine combined with a turbocharged 1.5 liter 3-cylinder engine that outputs 228 horsepower.

The car is capable of being driven in either a stand-alone electric mode or a combined mode which utilizes both engines. The stand-alone electric mode has a top speed of 75 mph while the combined mode has a limited top speed at 160 mph.

BMW i8 is the second model in the category of “I” models, after the compact-sized BMW i3.

Power of the BMW i8

BMW i8 0-60This luxury vehicle comes with a combination of electric and twin turbo gasoline motor. The electric motor has capacity of 7.1 KWh which produces a maximum power of 129 HP and 184 lbs-ft. of torque which is very impressive for the size of the engine.

At the rear axle of the vehicle, it is fitted with 1.5 liter gasoline motor which has a power capacity of 228 HP and has a maximum of 236 lbs-ft. of torque. Combining both engines, the BMW i8 has 357 HP and a very respectable 420 lbs-ft. of torque.

The car has a very stunning look in every color and wheel combination it is available in. The narrow headlights that come standard (as an option there is also laser technology) provide more bright light than that of regular LEDs. As such, the car will be at the center of attention wherever it is to be seen.

BMW i8 is available in variety of colors such as black, white, blue, and silver. For the double kidney shaped front grille, you can go for either silver or blue color. The dashboard has a pair of 8.8 inch HD screens that display the speed and energy gauges.

Quality is the top priority of the BMW i8, which is why it comes with excellent fit and finish. Similar to that of BMW i3, it uses sustainable and recycled materials in the manufacturing process. It is well equipped with Bluetooth, DAB Radio, and Satnav. The seats come with leather finishing.

The exterior shape of the car gives a dynamic look to the rest of the world. The under carriage of it is made up of light-weight aluminum. Its windows, sunroof and windshield are made up of polycarbonate glass.

Although the car looks like a million bucks, the performance can be a little disappointing considering it costs well over $100,000 to own. Still, it is quite an attractive addition to the sports luxury class of eco-friendly and electrically-powered vehicles.

Though it is designed for 2+2, it is difficult to be seated at the back side for a longer ride. The car itself can cover 300 miles with the full charge and full tank.

In the US, it takes about 3.5 hours to charge the battery completely using the standard 120V outlet, whereas in Europe’s 220V socket, it decreases the time to only 1.5 hours. Once fully charged, you can travel up to 23 miles with only the electric power supply and you can increase this range even more if you carefully make use of the regenerative braking system.

With more and more new technology in this car, it tempts people to know more about the reliability of the i8. Although there’s no sure way to know yet if it is reliable, the basic layout of this car has three cylinder engine and one electric motor. Theoretically, the regeneration of energy from the motors will put less strain on the brakes.

BMW i8 covers a battery with an 8 years and 100,000 miles warranty. The remaining parts of the car have a 3 year warranty. There is no compromise with safety of both car and occupants being seated inside. The air bags are provided for both driver and the front passenger. Crash structure is provided for the safety of the battery. Though it is of high tech construction, repair costs should be what is normally expected from BMW cars.

Features and Performance

BMW i8 is an eco-friendly car, but it doesn’t give up its practicality with its performance. This is specifically designed for the purpose of sports car. Performance is similar to that of top line sports car but it is still pretty fuel efficient.

It can sprint to 60 mph within 3.6 seconds and 1/4 mile in 12.1 seconds at about 116 mph. If you’re driving in electric-mode only, you can expect much less impressive numbers. The electric-mode can get to 60 mph in around 9.2 seconds and 1/4 mile in about 17.2 seconds at 74 mph.
