BMW M5 Performance Overview
BMW’s M5 performance record spans 1987 to 2025 across 50 independently verified tests, tracing the sedan and occasional Touring from hand-built, naturally aspirated origins to today’s electrified super-sedan pace. The early E28S set the baseline with a 1987 Sedan at 6.3 seconds to 60 mph, while the E34S moved the curve forward through the early 1990s, including a 1993 Bavarian Professionals Touring at 5.3 seconds. Power rose from the 256-hp S38B35 to later 310–315-hp S38 variants, all gasoline and naturally aspirated.
The E39S and E60/E61 generations compressed those numbers further as displacement and cylinder count grew. An E39 2002 Dinan S2 Sedan reached 4.1 seconds, and the V10-powered E60/E61 matched that with the 2009 Sedan. Turbocharging then reset the M5’s pace: the F10’s 560-hp S63B44T0 cut 0-60 to 3.6 seconds in a 2013 Sedan, before the all-wheel-drive F90 pushed much deeper into the 2-second range.
That F90 period remains the peak for outright acceleration, with the 2022 CS Sedan recording the all-time best 2.6-second 0-60 and a 10.6-second quarter-mile at 130 mph. Today’s G90 uses a 717-hp plug-in-hybrid S68 powertrain, and the quickest current car, the 2025 PHEV Sedan (M Driver’s Pack), runs 3.0 seconds to 60 mph.

How we verify BMW M5 performance data
Records and averages on this page cover verified production runs only; modified and prototype results are listed by year but never folded into them. We include only independently published road-test results from automotive publications. Manufacturer-claimed 0–60 times are excluded unless clearly labeled. When multiple publications test the same BMW M5 trim, each run is listed separately — weather, tires, surface, rollout, and instrumentation all affect results.
