About Chevrolet Equinox

Stylish and somewhat sporty, you wouldn’t think that the Chevrolet is this affordable. Yet when you consider its price and the features that it offers, you will really wonder how come GM was able to sell it this cheap?

Yes, the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox is a well-equipped vehicle very suited to families who need plenty of cargo space, but are not willing to compromise with style. This van has very flexible seating, with good handling and maneuverability and most of all, good fuel economy.

A Short Look at Equinox’s History

Chevrolet Equinox 0-60The Chevrolet Equinox is one of the mid-size crossover SUVs made by Chevrolet. It is based on General Motor’s Theta unibody platform developed at CAMI Automotive, a former GM/Suzuki joint venture.

This car was launched in 2004, using its 2005 model. Its unibody was patterned after the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. But the body of Chevrolet Equinox is larger than the Vue.

The Equinox is the first crossover SUV from Chevrolet which is marketed as a compact SUV. Two of the major components of its base model are made in two different countries. Its engine is made in China, while its automatic transmission is made in Japan.

Starting with its 2006 models, the Equinox was updated by GM for the first time. Since then, GM badges were added on the front doors of all Equinox models that rolled out of its manufacturing plant.

Specs

If you are looking for a family car with lots of cargo space, you should consider the following specifications of the Equinox.

  • Engine: 2.4L, DOHC, 4 cylinder SIDI engine, FWD
  • Horsepower: 182 horsepower at 6,700 RPM
  • Torque: 172 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,900 RPM
  • Fuel Injection: direct fuel injection
  • Transmission: 6 speed transmission, standard
  • Traction Control System: standard

There is one variant of Chevrolet Equinox which has a more powerful engine. Its specs are the following.

  • Engine: 3.6L, V6 SIDI engine, FWD
  • Horsepower: 301 horsepower at 6,500 RPM
  • Torque: 272 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 RPM
  • Fuel Injection: direct fuel injection
  • Transmission: 6 speed transmission, standard
  • Traction Control System: standard

Performance

Overall, the four-cylinder Equinox performs very well, as long as you won’t do any sports car like driving.

If you need to have more power, you have an option with the V6 model, but of course, it commands a higher price than the base model.

With the base engine, you will be able to get the most out of the car, if you are just a normal family, with typical normal needs. It has a 182 horsepower engine that can be considered as one of the more advanced engines in its class.

The car can pick up speed from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about 7.8-8.7 seconds depending on which trim you get. Its passing power is great, even if your passenger seats are full. The one thing that is noticeable is the direct-injection related clattering noise.

Fuel Economy

When it comes to fuel economy, this car will earn your praises. Even its V6 version is quite good at economizing fuel.

The EPA rating of the larger version is about 16 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway, with all of its 4 wheels engaged. If only the front wheels are working it consumes less fuel at a rating of 17/24 miles per gallon.

The base model has an EPA rating of 22 mpg in the city, and 32 mpg on the highway, front wheel drive working. If the AWD is engaged, the rating goes down to 20/29 mpg.

If you punch the ‘Eco’ button, you can enjoy a controlled climate inside the cabin, without consuming too much fuel.

Safety

As far as safety ratings are concerned, the Equinox fares very well. The IIHS gives it good ratings in several tests, although the NHTSA rates the car a bit lower.

Some of the features that make this car safe to drive are the StabiliTrak electronic stability control, the pelvic/thorax seat-mounted bags, the head-curtain air bags and the four-wheel disc brakes.

However, you will find some visibility issues, especially if you are taller than most drivers. You may find the thick rear pillar to be obstructing your view, as you try to pass another vehicle. Although its large blind-spot mirror will help you obtain a clear view.

Quality and Comfort

You will definitely like the good headroom space inside the cabin, from the front to the rear. In addition, the car’s sliding second-row seat gives a little more comfort to your passengers.

Front seat configurations as well as the driving position will make your driving a pleasant experience, not an arduous task that you will despise.

Overall, the features and quality of this car really makes it a good option for a family car. Its economy and its affordability, plus the comfort it offers are quite difficult to resist.
