Chevrolet Impala Performance Overview

Chevrolet’s full-size Impala spans 1961 to 2018 in this dataset, with 25 verified tests (24 production, 1 modified) across 14 model years. Early Third Generation cars set the first pace with the 1961 SS409 V8 Hardtop Coupe at 6.7 seconds to 60 mph, then the 1962 SS409 V8 Coupe at 6.3 seconds, powered by naturally aspirated 409 V8s rated from 360 to 409 hp. Performance fell back in the Fourth and Fifth Generation years covered here, including the 1965 SS V8 Hardtop Coupe at 12.4 seconds and the 1972 Custom Hardtop Coupe at 11.2 seconds.

The strongest mid-era results came with the Seventh Generation (1994–1996), when LT1-powered SS sedans returned the Impala to quicker acceleration. The 1995 Callaway SuperNatural SS Sedan remains the quickest recorded Impala to 60 mph at 5.5 seconds, while the modified 1996 SS V8 NOS Sedan produced the model’s best quarter-mile at 13.9 seconds at 100.9 mph. Later front-drive generations shifted to V6- and V8-powered gasoline layouts, from the 2000 LS V6 at 7.5 seconds to the 2006 SS V8 at 5.6 seconds.

In the Tenth Generation (2014–2020), Impala performance centered on naturally aspirated V6s rated from 195 to 305 hp, with the current-generation best being the 2014 2LT V6 at 6.0 seconds. Across the full run covered here, the Impala remains a gasoline-only performance record.

How we verify Chevrolet Impala performance data

We include only independently published road-test results from automotive publications. Manufacturer-claimed 0–60 times are excluded unless clearly labeled. When multiple publications test the same Chevrolet Impala trim, each run is listed separately — weather, tires, surface, rollout, and instrumentation all affect results.

The 2018 Chevrolet Impala Premier V6 reaches 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. Its quarter-mile time is 14.9 seconds at 96 mph. That test used the 305-hp 3.6-liter LGX V6, 264 lb-ft, front-wheel drive, and a curb weight of 3,811 pounds.
The quickest Impala on record is the 1995 Callaway SuperNatural SS Sedan at 5.5 seconds from 0-60 mph. That run came from a heavily modified car, so it stands as the overall fastest Impala test rather than the fastest stock or production Impala.
The fastest stock Chevrolet Impala on record is the 2006 SS V8, which hits 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. That makes it the quickest production Impala test, edging out every other stock example and sitting just behind the modified 1995 Callaway SuperNatural SS Sedan overall.
Across 25 verified Chevrolet Impala tests, the average 0-60 time is 7.26 seconds. The average quarter-mile across all tests is 15.65 seconds at 92 mph. Those figures include 1 non-production run along with 24 production vehicle tests.
The Tenth Generation Chevrolet Impala, sold from 2014 to 2020, averages 6.73 seconds from 0-60 mph across 6 tests. The fastest Tenth Generation run is 6.0 seconds by the 2014 2LT V6, making it the quickest version of the final Impala generation.
The Ninth Generation Impala, built from 2006 to 2013, averages 7.2 seconds from 0-60 mph across 4 tests. Its quickest recorded run is 5.6 seconds from the 2006 SS V8, which is also the fastest stock Chevrolet Impala overall.
The Seventh Generation Impala, sold from 1994 to 1996, averages 6.4 seconds to 60 mph across 6 tests. The fastest example is the 1995 Callaway SuperNatural SS Sedan at 5.5 seconds, although that result came from a heavily modified car rather than a stock production version.
The 2014 Impala 2LT V6 is quicker. It recorded a 0-60 time of 6.0 seconds, while the 2018 Impala Premier V6 ran 6.1 seconds. The gap is small at 0.1 second, but the 2014 2LT V6 stands as the quicker of the two tested trims.
The Impala SS V8 is much quicker than the LS V6. The SS V8's best recorded 0-60 time is 5.6 seconds, while the LS V6's best is 7.5 seconds. On average, LS V6 tests come in at 7.85 seconds, showing a clear performance gap between the two trim lines.
