About Volkswagen Tiguan

One great thing about the VW Tiguan is that it ranks number 10 among the 23 most affordable compact SUVs in the market. The car got this ranking based on its reliability and safety data, as well as its many positive reviews it got from owners and test drivers.

The engaging handling and powerful engine of the VW Tiguan makes it a standout among the cars in its class. Its engine efficiency makes it one of the most economical cars to drive around. You certainly need to consider this vehicle if you are in the market for this size and quality of car.

A Short Glimpse at VW Tiguan’s History

Volkswagen Tiguan 0-60The name of the car is a combination of the German words ‘tiger’ for the big cat, and ‘leguan’, a lizard called iguana. This was the name that won a naming contest run by the German car publisher Autobild.

The VW Tiguan was launched at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2006. It was originally introduced by Volkswagen as a concept car. The production of this model began in the winter of 2007 at Volkswagen’s subsidiary Auto 5000, an experimental company within a company in Wolfsburg.

By 2011, over 700,000 Tiguans have been sold around the globe. The greatest numbers of Tiguans were sold in the United States, Europe, Russia, Australia, Brazil and China. The Euro NCAP gave the VW Tiguan a five star safety rating.

The Tiguan is a compact crossover vehicle that used the PQ35 platform of the Volkswagen Golf. All VW Tiguan cars have two-row seating and four-cylinder engines.

There are three variants of the VW Tiguan, and here are their most essential specifications:

1) Tiguan Highline
Engine – 2.0 liter turbocharged, in-line 4-cylinder, 16 Valve, with intercooler
Horsepower – 200 hp. at 5,100 to 6,000 RPM
Torque – 207 lb. ft. at 1,700 to 5,000 RPM, maximum
Drive Train – 4 MOTION all-wheel drive system with adaptive torque distribution
Transmission – automatic

2) Tiguan Comfortline
Engine – 2.0 liter turbocharged, in-line 4 cylinder, 16 Valve, with intercooler
Horsepower – 200 hp. at 5,100 to 6,000 RPM
Torque – 207 lb. ft. at 1,700 to 5,000 RPM, maximum
Drive train – front-wheel drive
Transmission – automatic

3) Tiguan Trendline
Engine – 2.0 liter turbocharged, in-line 4-cylinder, 16 Valve, with intercooler
Horsepower – 200 hp. at 5,100 to 6,000 RPM
Torque – 207 lb. ft. at 1,700 to 5,000 RPM, maximum
Drive train – front-wheel drive
Transmission – manual

Being built primarily as a work-horse, you wouldn’t find the VW Tiguan to have driving dynamics that will please the driver. But as a tool to do heavy duty work, it surpasses all cars in its class.

The VW Tiguan is really meant to haul people and things. Its 200 horsepower turbo four and standard manual transmission might seem sporty, but it really is not made for that purpose.

However, the VW Tiguan is more responsive than a Hyundai Tucson or a Toyota Rav4. Its main plus point is its ability to tow 2,200 pounds of cargo which is perfect if you are hauling a small trailer filled with your household stuff.

This car takes good advantage of its engine’s power. It will keep your daily commute easy and comfortable.

Fuel Consumption

Based on its EPA rating, the VW Tiguan does not do well in the fuel economy department. The gas consumption of the front-wheel drive manual can range as low as 18 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg on the city, and as high as 21 mpg on the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Unfortunately, these figures are almost at the bottom of the crossover class. If you are looking for a vehicle with excellent fuel economy, then other VW models would be better. But if you are not much concerned about fuel efficiency, and you want a powerful but not too large SUV, this car is for you.

The VW Tiguan was given an overall rating of four out of five stars by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). In addition, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway) crash- test results have fallen as a result of the introduction of new modes of testing.

That means the VW Tiguan’s safety capabilities have improved. The outward visibility of this car model has also improved. This is due to the relatively low beltline, and the taller seating position.

The overall quality standard of the VW Tiguan has also improved. There is really nothing inside the cabin that is out of place. The materials used are of high quality and their detailing is really very polished, and their assembly quality is really tight.

Overall, you will really love the quality and power of the VW Tiguan. It can be compared to high premium cars which are much more expensive. Certainly, if you want power and convenience, this car is a good choice.
