Volkswagen Passat Performance Overview

Volkswagen’s Passat traces a clear performance arc across 52 verified tests spanning 1974 to 2020. Early B1 results were modest, with the 1974 Sedan (Aus. Spec) needing 13.2 seconds to reach 60 mph from its 74-hp naturally aspirated gasoline setup. By the B3 years, output had risen into the 134-hp range and the 1990 GL Sedan cut that to 9.2 seconds. The B4 then brought six-cylinder performance into the range, as the 1993 GLX V6 Sedan reached 60 mph in 7.7 seconds.

The biggest acceleration gains came through the B5 and B6 eras, when the Passat expanded from four- and six-cylinder gasoline engines to include turbocharged and diesel options, and power climbed as high as 270 hp. The 2003 W8 4Motion Sedan recorded 6.4 seconds to 60 mph, followed by the 2006 3.6 Sedan at 5.9 seconds. In B7, the VR6-powered 2012 V6 SEL Premium Sedan established the model’s quickest published launch at 5.7 seconds and also delivered the best quarter-mile result, 14.2 seconds at 100.9 mph.

The final B8 period kept the Passat in that range rather than pushing quicker, with the 2016 V6 SEL Premium Sedan matching the current-generation best of 5.7 seconds.
