Across 51 verified tests spanning 1954 to 2019, the Volkswagen Beetle traces an unusually broad performance arc, from early air-cooled economy coupe to later front-engine hatchback and convertible. The first data point, the 1954 Fisher 1200 Coupe, needed 35 seconds to reach 60 mph, while period tuning quickly reduced that figure: the 1955 MAG Supercharged 1200 Coupe managed 22.0 seconds, the 1957 Judson 1200 Coupe 18.0, and the 1967 1500 Coupe 17.4. Those early cars chart the Beetle’s original rear-engine, gasoline-powered era and its gradual output gains.

After a long gap in the test record, the 1998-2010 New Beetle (A5) reset the model’s performance baseline with modern gasoline and diesel options. The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition SE Convertible reaches 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. In our tests, it also ran the quarter-mile in 16.2 seconds at 89 mph. That current-year result comes from the 174-hp turbocharged EA888-powered front-wheel-drive convertible.
The quickest Beetle on record is the 2013 APR Super Beetle Hatchback at 3.9 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. It is also the fastest Beetle in the quarter-mile, posting 12.6 seconds at 110.2 mph. That car was heavily modified, so it is not the fastest stock Beetle.
The fastest stock Volkswagen Beetle on record is the 2014 GSR Hatchback, which reaches 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. That makes it the quickest production Beetle in the verified runs here. Overall, there are 51 Beetle tests recorded, with a 10.21-second average 0-60 time across all of them.
Across 51 Volkswagen Beetle tests, the average 0-60 time is 10.21 seconds. The average quarter-mile is 16.27 seconds at 86.5 mph. That broad average spans multiple eras of the Beetle, from much slower classic models to modern turbocharged versions and one heavily modified outlier.
The fastest A5 (Typ 5C) Beetle, covering the 2011 to 2019 generation, is the 2013 APR Super Beetle Hatchback at 3.9 seconds to 60 mph. Across 25 tests, this generation averages 7.26 seconds to 60. Power ranges from 140 to 210 hp, with gasoline and diesel versions both represented.
The New Beetle (A5), sold from 1998 to 2010, averages 8.48 seconds from 0 to 60 mph across 18 tests. The quickest example on record is the 2001 HPA Motorsports GT6 Hatchback at 4.25 seconds. This generation spans a wide 90 to 500 hp range and includes gasoline and diesel models.
For the 2011-2019 A5 (Typ 5C) generation, the fastest stock Beetle is the 2014 GSR Hatchback at 6.0 seconds to 60 mph. That is the quickest production result for the final Beetle generation. The overall generation leader is quicker at 3.9 seconds, but that 2013 APR Super Beetle was heavily modified.
The GSR Hatchback is quicker on record. Its best 0-60 time is 6.0 seconds, while the Turbo S Hatchback's best is 6.6 seconds. Looking at averages, the GSR also leads at 6.15 seconds versus 7.0 seconds for the Turbo S. Both are among the faster Beetle trims tested.
