About Cadillac XTS
The Cadillac XTS is a large luxury sedan from General Motors, under its Cadillac division. It is a fairly new model, having been introduced to the motoring public in 2012. It is one of the most technically advanced models in the storied history of General Motors, and a lot of tycoons and Wall Street executives can be seen riding this sedan.
One of the world’s richest men, Warren Buffett, is a proud owner of a Cadillac XTS. Popular actor Brad Pitt also appears in a TV advertisement pitching the Cadillac XTS to the Chinese population.
The XTS is actually geared at the younger market. GM hopes that the XTS would help Cadillac shed its image as a car for the old. The average age of a Cadillac car owner was 59.5 years old in 2013, third among the major brands. Ford Lincoln had an average car buyer age of 61 while Buick had 60.3 years old.
The first XTS, launched in 2013, was powered by a 3.6 liter V engine that delivers 304 horsepower. It can accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 5.2 to 7.2 seconds depending on the model type. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency ratings are at 17 and 28 mpg for city and highway driving, respectively.
Here are the specs of the 2015 Cadillac XTS:
- Engine: 3.6 liter V engine
- Horsepower: 304 @ 6800 rpm
- Torque: 264 pound feet @ 5400 rpm
- Transmission: Six speed automatic
- Drivetrain: Front wheel drive
- Fuel Efficiency: 16 mpg city driving, 24 mpg highway driving
- Top speed: 137 mph
- Passenger capacity: Five
There are actually two engine choices for the XTS. The base engine is the 3.6 liter, V6 engine that produces 304 horsepower.
If that power is not sufficient for you, opt for the twin-turbocharged engine that churns out 410 horsepower. The base engine is coupled with a standard front wheel drive, while the turbo models are of the all-wheel drive variety. Both engines are coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The standard V6 engine uses regular unleaded gasoline while the turbocharged engine requires premium fuel.
The XTS can be aggressive with its powerful engine, but it can also transport its passengers with such pampering comfort. It can cruise effortlessly depite poor road conditions thanks to its Magnetic Ride Control that allows it to adapt to different conditions in just seconds.
When you step inside the sedan, a rich and luxuriously designed cabin greets you. The leather trimmed seats of the base trim are comfy and attractive, while the interior panels of the top-line models are wrapped with leather.
The rear seats have enough leg room, and there’s a huge trunk that provides 18 cubic feet of space, enough to accommodate several large suitcases. Although the trunk space is one of the biggest among sedans today, it is strangely narrow which may make it hard to place long items like golf bags.
The interiors of the XTS may look stylish, but its infotainment system is quite a disappointment. For instance, its standard CUE system is hard to use. You would have to spend some time to learn simple functions like changing the audio and climate settings.
The cabin of the XTS is isolated from external noise that you will not notice the sound of the engine when it is running on the highway.
Standard equipment on the base model include power adjustable steering wheel, dual zone auto climate control, rear parking assist, Bluetooth audio and USB inputs and an eight-speaker sound system. The XTS is also equipped with Onstar with 4G LTE as well as an integrated Wi-Fi hot spot.
Optional equipment includes a 14-speaker surround sound audio system, sunroof, navigational assistance, and a dual screen rear seat DVD system.
The Cadillac XTS features an advanced safety system that includes lane departure warning, blind spot detection, and forward collision alert. The driver seat also automatically vibrates whenever the car detects lane changes or an impending collission.
In terms of safety ratings, the XTS has ‘good’ ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for side impact test, rear crash protection, roof strength, and moderate overlap front test.
The base Cadillac XTS has a starting MSRP of around $45,000. It is slightly more expensive than other luxury sedans like the Lincoln MKS, Audi A6, Lexus GS and BMW 5 Series, although it is cheaper than the Acura RX and the Infiniti Q70. Of course, a more loaded model would boost the price of the XTS to as much as $70,000.
There are not a lot of bad things to say about the Cadilac XTS. Its infotainment system and oddly shaped trunk are probably the only weaknesses of this car. For that, you can expect the 2015 Cadillac XTS to become one of the top selling luxury sedans this year.
