Mazda RX-7 Performance Overview

Mazda’s RX-7 traces a clear rotary-powered performance arc across 12 verified tests spanning 1979 to 1995. In SA22C/FB form (1979–1985), the coupe established the template with naturally aspirated 12A and 13B engines rated from 100 to 135 hp. Early results were modest by later standards, starting at 8.9 seconds to 60 mph for the 1979 Hatchback Coupe and improving to 7.8 seconds in the 1984 GSL-SE Hatchback Coupe as output and chassis tuning advanced.

The FC generation (1986–1992) broadened the range with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged 13B variants producing 146 to 200 hp. That era’s progression is visible in the numbers: the 1987 Turbo Hatchback Coupe reached 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, while the 1990 Turbo II Hatchback Coupe cut that to 6.0 seconds. Not every configuration chased outright acceleration, with the 1988 Convertible posting the model line’s slowest recorded 9.2-second run.

With the FD generation, sold during this dataset from 1993 to 1995, the RX-7 moved exclusively to the twin-turbocharged 13B-REW at 255 hp. Tested coupes averaged 5.38 seconds to 60 mph, led by the 4.5-second 1993 PFS Limited Edition Coupe, which also set the model’s best 12.8-second quarter-mile at 114 mph. In this sample, the RX-7 ends as a gasoline-only rotary coupe at its quickest point.
