Volvo XC40 Performance Overview

Volvo’s smallest crossover in this dataset spans 15 verified tests across 2019 to 2024, all within the First Generation (2018–present). Over that run, XC40 performance broadened from turbocharged gasoline models using 2.0-liter four-cylinders such as the B4204T family to electrified variants, with output ranging from 187 to 402 horsepower and a mix of gasoline, hybrid, and electric powertrains. Early results centered on the T4 and T5, with the 2019 T5 R-Design establishing an initial benchmark at 6.2 seconds to 60 mph, while the slower end of the tested range includes a 2019 T5 R-Design run of 8.2 seconds.

The major shift came for 2021, when the dual-motor battery-electric P8 R-Design Recharge reset the XC40’s ceiling with an all-time best 4.2-second 0-60 time and a matching 12.8-second quarter-mile at 107.7 mph. Later testing shows the lineup settling into a wider spread: recent mild-hybrid and single-motor versions such as the B5 Ultimate and Recharge Ultimate Single Motor keep the XC40 in the mainstream compact-luxury crossover performance band rather than extending beyond that 2021 peak. As it stands today, the current XC40 range remains defined by that broad powertrain diversity and by the P8 Recharge’s position as the quickest version recorded.
