About Volvo XC90

If you’re a family looking for a spacious van, you might want to consider Volvo XC90. It is a vehicle that is stylish, tech savvy and should provide your family the required ample space while traveling.

This car is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV made by Volvo Cars. It is the top selling model of this car maker in the United States as well as its best-selling model all over the world. Just in the year 2005 alone, this model has sold more than 85,900 units.

A Bit of Volvo XC90’s History

Volvo XC90 0-60Volvo Cars introduced the Volvo XC90 at the January 2001 North American International Auto Show. The car manufacturer presented it as an Adventure Concept Car to determine the reaction of the car market to the features and style of its upcoming SUV.

The following November, Volvo published a teaser image presenting the frontal styling of the production version. Volvo named it XC90. The styling of this new XC90 was faithful to the concept presented 10 months earlier.

Volvo unveiled the full XC90 in January 2002 again at the North American International Auto Show. Production of the car started in August 2002 with the first XC90s rolling out of Volvo’s Torslanda factory in Sweden.

Here are the most important specs of the Volvo XC90 that you need to know:

  • Engine – 3.2 liter I6, 240 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 236 lb.-ft. torque at 3,200 RPM
  • Transmission – 6 speed automatic
  • Fuel – gasoline
  • Layout – front wheel drive
  • Front suspension – strut type
  • Rear suspension – Multi-link

There are several power trains that Volvo is using for the Volvo XC90. But no matter what power train is aboard a Volvo XC90, the car will allow a more nimble driving experience compared to the previous model. This current model weighs less and is 250 pounds lighter than the outgoing model.

The range of Volvo XC90 includes 3 models. The 3.2 liter variant can get to 60 mph in around 9 seconds. The hybrid model, with an electric motor as a corollary power source can also reach up to 40 miles on electricity alone.

Fuel Consumption

Having a powerful engine, the Volvo XC90 is not known for its fuel economy. Its fuel consumption for highway driving is rated at 23 miles per gallon, while for city driving; it consumes about 16 miles per gallon.

This car is not for those who are economizing on fuel. But if you are after a car that can provide ample power with a large cabin space, this is your car choice.

Quality and Comfort

You will love the front seats of this car because it has a new design which is re-sculpted for improved back support. The same thing goes with the second and third row seats. They also have a new design and reapportioned as well.

You can now adjust the second row several inches forward and aft. The third row is now resized to accommodate those who are as tall as 5 feet seven inches.

All of the seats are very comfortable and the entry and the exit to the third row is one of the best in its class. The hybrid variant has enough cargo space, and is so versatile, with its second row having three individual folding sections. Its third row can now be folded forward allowing you to form a flush and continuous loading floor.

There are many upgraded features of the new Volvo XC 90 compared to its older version. All variants are now equipped with a new version of Volvo’s Sensus system which features a capacitive touch screen that easily responds to swipes, pinches and other typical tablet gestures. It is also laid out in a portrait orientation.

The new Volvo XC90 also comes with a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system. This sound system is the first fresh-air-ventilated subwoofer in a car. The subwoofer is actually incorporated in the car body which turns the whole space into a bass sounding chamber.

The new Volvo XC90 is equipped with two new safety features – the first in the world. Its first safety feature is called ‘run-off-road’ wherein the system tightens the front seat belts. This system’s design also provides protection to the spine from the strong vertical focus which can happen when the car lands in a ditch or jumps a barrier. The second safety feature enables the car to brake automatically if the car turns into an oncoming car.

Considering all the features of Volvo XC90, it is no great wonder why it can fulfill the needs of a family that puts great value in space and comfort. If these are the things that you are searching for in a family van, you don’t have to look any farther.
