Mercedes-Benz M-Class Performance Overview
Mercedes-Benz’s M-Class performance story spans 1998 to 2015, covering 33 independently verified tests across 14 model years. In first-generation W163 form, the range began with naturally aspirated gasoline V6 and V8 power, from the 215-hp M112 to the 342-hp M113 V8 in the AMG model. Early results reflected that spread: the 1998 ML320 reached 60 mph in 8.9 seconds, the 1999 ML430 cut that to 8.1, and the 2000 ML55 AMG established the first clear high-performance benchmark at 6.3 seconds.
The second-generation W164, sold from 2006 to 2011, broadened the formula with both gasoline and diesel options and output rising to 503 hp. That era’s key step was the 2007 ML63 AMG, which dropped 0-60 to 4.6 seconds as the model moved from naturally aspirated mainstream SUVs into consistently quicker AMG territory. Average acceleration improved accordingly, with the generation averaging 6.71 seconds to 60 mph.
W166, introduced for 2012, brought the quickest M-Class results of the entire run, with gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 200 to 550 hp and including twin-turbocharged V8 power. The 2012 ML63 AMG (AMG Performance Pack) remains the quickest recorded example at 4.2 seconds to 60 mph and a 12.6-second quarter-mile at 113 mph. By the end of production, the M-Class stood as a broad-performance luxury SUV line with a 0-60 range from 4.2 to 10.3 seconds.

How we verify Mercedes-Benz M-Class performance data
We include only independently published road-test results from automotive publications. Manufacturer-claimed 0–60 times are excluded unless clearly labeled. When multiple publications test the same Mercedes-Benz M-Class trim, each run is listed separately — weather, tires, surface, rollout, and instrumentation all affect results.
