About Jeep Renegade
The Jeep Renegade is the newest small SUV in the market. It has Jeep’s iconic seven-slot grille but its overall design is far from the shape of the original. Jeep has specifically designed this SUV to attract new buyers to its brand.

A Short Look at Jeep Renegade’s History
The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV and is made by the Jeep division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in Melfi, Italy. It shares its platform with the Fiat 500X. This platform is based on the Small US Wide 4×4 architecture.
The vehicle was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March, 2014. Mass production followed later in August, 2014. This vehicle is the first mass produced SUV outside of the United States and is intended to be sold in the car markets of Europe, South Africa, Brazil, and North America.
The most important specifications of this car that you need to know are the following:
- Engine: 1.4 L turbocharged Inline 4 cylinders, 16 valves, 160 horsepower at 55,500 RPM, 184 lb. -ft. at 2500 rpm of torque.
- Transmission: six speed manual
- Steering: electric power steering
- Drive train: front wheel drive
- Suspension: four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear stabilizer bar
- Brakes: ABS
This is a small SUV that is perfect for driving around the city as well as on the highway. The engine of the base model is capable enough to handle both styles of driving. But wait till you drive the more powerful 2.4 liter engine, with a nine speed automatic gear box. It can take all the bumps and breaks on the road quite easily.
Although the electric power steering does not give much feedback, you will find that it is tuned very well and is very responsive too.
The Renegade’s AWD version is designed to run from complete stop with all four wheels engaged. But the SelectTerrain control system slowly cuts the power directed to the rear wheels. And then the front wheels will be doing all the running above 40 miles per hour.
But when you start to negotiate rough roads and you switch into one of the traction modes, the rear wheels will kick back again and help the front wheels to move you forward. The rear wheels are also activated again if the sensors detect wheel slip on the front wheels.
Although you might be using the Renegade mostly in the city, it is still very capable in handling off road conditions. It is perfectly capable of climbing steep dirt and gravel mountain roads. You can also run it down a hill with a 45 degree slant very easily.
The Renegade is also very capable of climbing boulders and fording streams. It can be equipped with 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels so it can easily perform these kinds of tasks.
In the city, you can easily squeeze it in even in tight parking spaces. Its excellent maneuverability will get you off when caught in tight traffic situations.
The Jeep Renegade, according to its manufacturer can give you 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Its performance in the city will therefore be lower than that. Unfortunately, the EPA has not rated this car yet. Perhaps, the reason is that the car has just been launched recently.
But comparing that figure with that of the Chevy Trax, which is rated at 27 mpg combined, the figure provided by the maker of the Renegade is almost the same. Therefore, the fuel economy of this vehicle is not worse or any better than other car brands in its class.
This small SUV is equipped with the ‘biggest’ safety features that you can see in the market. Standard safety features include seven airbags, a body which is composed of various grades of high strength steel (about 70 per cent), and a rear vision camera.
Among its optional electronic safety systems are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Forward Collision Warning Plus with automatic braking, and lane departure warning and correction.
There are no crash test ratings from the IIHS and the NHTSA, since both these agencies have not tested the car yet. With the Jeep Renegade’s growing popularity in the car market, it is suspected that these two agencies will test the car soon.
Comfort and Quality
With its wide cabin and excellent noise suppression, you will certainly have a very comfortable ride in this car.
Compared to other compact SUVs, the interior of the Jeep Renegade is significantly wider. When you are inside, you will get the feeling that it is a larger vehicle than it really is.
There are a lot of useful bins inside the cabin, and the seats are bolstered very nicely making them very comfortable to sit in.
