General Motors Basic History
GM was established by William “Billy” Durant on September 16, 1908. The company started only as the Buick Motor Company. But in just a few years, it was able to acquire controlling interests in 20 different companies. These included Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Oakland which is known today as Pontiac.
Opel, a German automobile company, entered the burgeoning car market with its Opel-Patent-Motorwagen System Lutzman. It was acquired by General Motors thirty years after, and has since been producing GM cars.
