About MINI Cooper

The Mini Cooper is one of the most popular cars in the world, with a very familiar look. It started as a small economy car manufactured by the British Motor Corporation. It became huge in the 60s, with many celebrities from the movie and music industry purchasing it. Today it remains as a British icon.

It’s not hard to understand why the Mini Cooper is so popular. Yes, it’s small but it is very easy to drive. Plus, its small frame meant it was easy to park anywhere. The affordability of the Mini Cooper also made it the top choice of young adults who were looking to buy their first car.

Specs

MINI Cooper 0-60Here are the specs of the 2015 Mini Cooper

  • Engine: 2.0L 4 cylinder inter-cooled turbo
  • Horsepower: 189 hp @ 4,700 rpm
  • Torque: 207 lb-ft @ 1,250 rpm
  • Transmission: Manual
  • Drivetrain: Front wheel drive
  • Fuel Efficiency Ratings: 26 mpg city driving, 32 mpg highway driving
  • 0-60: 6.2 seconds
  • ¼ Mile: 14.8 seconds
  • MSRP: $20,700

Performance

The Cooper S has a 2 liter, four-cylinder engine that can produce 189 horsepower at 4,700 rpm and torque of 207 pound feet. This engine can move the small car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds, and to quarter mile in 14.8 seconds.

The standard transmission for this engine is a six-speed manual, although you can also opt for the six-speed automatic.

Mini Cooper S model has fuel efficiency ratings of 26 mpg and 32 mpg for city and highway driving, which is good for its class.

Living up to the tradition of the old Coopers, both base model and Cooper S variants of the 2015 Mini Cooper are fun to drive. There is enough power for both Mini Cooper models, although the base hardtop is noticeably sluggish compared to the Cooper S.

The Mini Cooper’s handling can be described as sharp, while brakes are strong and the steering, very responsive. While the Mini Cooper is agile on the road, the tradeoff is that it doesn’t offer a very smooth ride which is expected of a small car.

Interior and Exterior

The 2015 Mini Cooper comes in various forms—a two or four-door hatchback and a two-door convertible.

The two door hatchback is slightly bigger than its predecessor but it is still small, hence its name. Its backseat naturally provides more room than its predecessor.

The four-door hatchback is around six inches longer than the two-door, making it a great car for those who always find it hard to park a car. With a bigger space, the four-door hatchback has a fifth seat although it is still uncomfortably narrow for an adult.

In terms of cargo space, the two-door hatchback offers 38 cubic feet while the four-door has around 41 cubes. Of course bear in mind that the Mini Cooper isn’t designed to carry a lot of bags and luggage. If you want more cargo space, then opt for the Volkswagen Golf or even a sedan.

Both hatchback models have standard equipment such as automatic headlights, 15-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, tilt and telescoping multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, adjustable driving modes, refrigerated glovebox, height-adjustable front seats, and leatherette upholstery. The seats at the back are of the 60/40 split-folding variety which gives more storage space to the passengers and driver.

Other features include color-adjustable ambient lighting, USB and iPod adapter, auxiliary input jack, Bluetooth integration, six-speaker sound system, and full power accessories.

Unlike in previous models of the Mini Cooper, the climate and audio controls are now easier to use. Another standout feature is the Mini Connected Infotainment system that is akin to the iDrive system of BMW.

Safety

Standard safety features of the Mini Cooper include driver and passenger air bags, side head and rear head air bags, and side air bag. The car also has four-wheel ABS, four-wheel disc brakes, brake assist, and electronic stability control. It is also equipped with traction control, daytime running lights, and automatically leveling headlights.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has only tested the Mini Cooper in one test– Moderate Overlap Front Test, where it got a rating of ‘good.’

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the Mini Cooper a four-star rating.

Pricing

The base Mini Cooper 2-door is priced at around $21,000, including the destination charge. If you want the Mini Cooper S, you’d have to shell out $4,000 more. The Mini Cooper 4-door is around $26,000. The high end John Cooper Works edition is more than $30,000.

The Mini Cooper is ranged against other compact cars like the Honda Fit, Hyundai Veloster, and Fiat 500. It’s a bit more expensive than these small cars but it also caters to a slightly different market.
