Mazda RX-7 Performance Overview

Mazda’s RX-7 traces a clear rotary-powered performance arc across 12 verified tests spanning 1979 to 1995. In SA22C/FB form (1979–1985), the coupe established the template with naturally aspirated 12A and 13B engines rated from 100 to 135 hp. Early results were modest by later standards, starting at 8.9 seconds to 60 mph for the 1979 Hatchback Coupe and improving to 7.8 seconds in the 1984 GSL-SE Hatchback Coupe as output and chassis tuning advanced.

The FC generation (1986–1992) broadened the range with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged 13B variants producing 146 to 200 hp. That era’s progression is visible in the numbers: the 1987 Turbo Hatchback Coupe reached 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, while the 1990 Turbo II Hatchback Coupe cut that to 6.0 seconds. Not every configuration chased outright acceleration, with the 1988 Convertible posting the model line’s slowest recorded 9.2-second run.

With the FD generation, sold during this dataset from 1993 to 1995, the RX-7 moved exclusively to the twin-turbocharged 13B-REW at 255 hp. Tested coupes averaged 5.38 seconds to 60 mph, led by the 4.5-second 1993 PFS Limited Edition Coupe, which also set the model’s best 12.8-second quarter-mile at 114 mph. In this sample, the RX-7 ends as a gasoline-only rotary coupe at its quickest point.

How we verify Mazda RX-7 performance data

Records and averages on this page cover verified production runs only; modified and prototype results are listed by year but never folded into them. We include only independently published road-test results from automotive publications. Manufacturer-claimed 0–60 times are excluded unless clearly labeled. When multiple publications test the same Mazda RX-7 trim, each run is listed separately — weather, tires, surface, rollout, and instrumentation all affect results.

Mazda RX-7 performance FAQs

10 questions
The 1995 Mazda RX-7 reaches 60 mph in 5.3 to 5.4 seconds across verified stock tests. Both recorded runs were for the Coupe, using the 255-hp twin-turbo 13B-REW rotary engine and rear-wheel drive. Quarter-mile times were 13.9 seconds at 104 mph and 14.1 seconds at 99.9 mph.
The quickest RX-7 on record is the 1993 Mazda RX-7 PFS Limited Edition Coupe, which runs 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. It also owns the quickest quarter-mile result at 12.8 seconds at 114 mph. That makes it the fastest RX-7 overall and the quickest factory-spec example in verified testing.
The fastest stock RX-7 is also the overall quickest one on record: the 1993 PFS Limited Edition Coupe at 4.5 seconds from 0-60 mph. Since all 12 RX-7 tests are production vehicles, there is no separate modified result to beat it. Its 12.8-second quarter-mile at 114 mph is also the quickest stock pass.
The FD-generation Mazda RX-7, sold from 1993 to 2002, averages 5.38 seconds from 0-60 mph across 5 tests. Its quickest verified run is 4.5 seconds, recorded by the 1993 PFS Limited Edition Coupe. Every FD test in the record uses the same 255-hp twin-turbo power level.
The FC-generation RX-7, built from 1986 to 1992, averages 7.64 seconds from 0-60 mph across 5 tests. The fastest FC on record is the 1990 Turbo II Hatchback Coupe at 6.0 seconds. FC models span 146 to 200 hp and include both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions.
The first-generation SA22C/FB RX-7, sold from 1979 to 1985, averages 8.35 seconds from 0-60 mph across 2 tests. The quickest example is the 1984 GSL-SE Hatchback Coupe at 7.8 seconds. First-generation cars in the record are naturally aspirated, with output ranging from 100 to 135 hp.
The 1993 Mazda RX-7 PFS Limited Edition Coupe is the quickest RX-7 on record, reaching 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. It is also the fastest to the quarter-mile, finishing in 12.8 seconds at 114 mph. That makes it the benchmark performance version of the FD generation.
The 1993 PFS Limited Edition Coupe is quicker. It runs 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, while the 1995 RX-7 Coupe has verified times of 5.3 and 5.4 seconds. The gap is 0.8 to 0.9 second in favor of the 1993 special edition, making it the faster FD-generation RX-7.
The 1995 RX-7 Coupe is faster. Its verified 0-60 mph times are 5.3 and 5.4 seconds, while the 1990 RX-7 Turbo II Hatchback Coupe records 6.0 seconds. That puts the 1995 car ahead by 0.6 to 0.7 second, showing the performance jump from FC to FD generations.
Across all 12 RX-7 tests, the average quarter-mile time is 15.1 seconds at 93.1 mph. The quickest RX-7 quarter-mile on record is the 1993 PFS Limited Edition Coupe at 12.8 seconds and 114 mph. For the 1995 RX-7 Coupe specifically, recorded runs are 13.9 seconds at 104 mph and 14.1 seconds at 99.9 mph.
