About Volvo S80
The Volvo S80 remains the flagship sedan of the Swedish automaker. In case you are looking for a luxury sedan with topnotch safety features and comfortable seats, then you must make this your top choice. The exterior of the car is nothing to write home about, but at least you and your family members or friends will have a comfortable ride most of the time.
The 2015 Volvo S80 is available in six styles, with the base model priced at around $40,000. It features the four-cylinder, 240 horsepower 2 liter intercooled I-4 engine. The same engine is found in two other styles, the T5-platinum four-wheel drive sedan and the T5 Premier plus front-wheel drive sedan.
If you want more power, then opt for the three other styles- T6, T6 Platinum, and T6 Premier which boast of a six-cylinder, 3 liter engine which produces 300 horsepower.
What can you expect from the Volvo S80? Here are some of the spec of its base model, the T5 front wheel drive:
- Engine: 2 liter, intercooled turbo regular I-4 with 240 horsepower @ 5600 rpm
- Fuel economy ratings: 25 MPG for city driving, 37 MPG for highway driving
- Number of passengers: five including driver
- Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: Front wheel drive
- Base price: Starting at $40,500
From the outside, the Volvo S80 won’t turn a lot of heads. Its exterior has remained basically unchanged for the past few years and the Swedish automaker has been known to keep a conservative approach when it comes to designing its cars. However, go inside the car and you’ll be surprised at what the S80 has in store for you.
There’s a hint of sophistication inside the S80. You don’t need to have an expert eye to be able to discern that Volvo used high quality materials for the interiors of this car. You’ll love the sleek surfaces, elegant finishes, and light and dark tones covering the cabin. There’s a floating center, a thin panel where the audio system controls are located that offers storage and good looks to the interiors.
The seats are comfortable, capable of accommodating passengers regardless of their size and height. With intelligently contoured backs, the rear seats can also provide adequate and comfortable seating to adults.
Riding the Volvo S80 is a lot more fun with its entertainment features like an audio system with AM/FM radio, CD player, digital and satellite radio. It includes an in-dash DVD, color screen, and Internet radio.
The upgraded Premium Plus style has a compass in the rear-view mirror as well as a grocery bag holder. It also features a garage door opener, and a rear-view camera with park assist. The front passenger is a quick-fold type as well.
You may find yourself distracted with the interiors and top-flight entertainment features of the S80, to the point that you may lose focus when driving. The chances of you encountering an accident are low with the safety features of the S80.
There are camera and radar-based security systems like the adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning system. It also features a pedestrian detection with full brake, and alerts your distance. The Road Sign information system, which was introduced in the previous model, is back, as well as the headlight washers and rain-sensor wipers.
The city safety function of Volvo is also incorporated in the S80. This program makes use of a laser sensor to automatically activate the brakes at lower speeds whenever the sensor detects a forthcoming impact.
All these features are nice, but the driver in you would naturally ask – how is the S80 on the road?
The 2015 S80 has better fuel efficiency numbers compared to the old model at 25 mpg for city driving and 37 for highway driving. The older model has 20/29. It also has an auto start/stop feature which automatically turns off the engine whenever the car is on a standstill to conserve fuel.
The S80 is more of a luxury sedan so don’t expect driving it to be a thrilling adventure. The steering can be dull, and its heft makes driving it somewhat staid. The T6 models offering a more powerful engine has an active suspension model with several modes like comfort and sport. Still, the overall feel of driving the S80 T6 is simulated and not performance-oriented.
However, given the classy interiors of the S80 particularly its comfortable seats, the luxury sedan is an excellent ride for long trips.
The Volvo S80 is a great choice if you are looking for a luxury sedan with an above-average engine, excellent interiors and security systems. The exteriors may be too bland for your taste, however for its price there are only a few models that can match up with the features of the Volvo S80.
