When you actually need a heavy-duty pickup truck, you better look at the ones with diesel engines. More specifically, you should check out the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel.
When it comes to the F-Series from Ford, you have lots of options and models to consider. Even opting for the F-250 still leaves you a lot of choices to make. You can go with the Regular Cab XL with the base price of $35,730. Or you can go all the way with the Limited Crew Cab, if you have $85,825 to spare. We compromised and went with the 4X4 Lariat Crew Cab, though it may seem a bit pricey at just a few dollars short of $65,000.
Diesel vs Gas Engines
More specifically, we went with the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel. Its 3rd-generation Power Stroke 6.7-liter diesel V8. The turbo has been upgraded here, the fuel delivery system is brand-new, and the internals have all been enhanced. All these gave us 475 horsepower with an amazing 1,050 lb-ft of torque.
That’s a lot of power, especially when compared to the gas counterparts. The standard 6.2-liter V8 only gets you 385 HP with 430 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the new 7.3-liter V8 engine, and that still only gives you 430 HP with 475 lb-ft of torque.
Payload and Towing Capacity
If you’re really serious about putting the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel to work, you’ll find this robust pickup truck up to the task—whatever it may be.
It has a towing capacity of 22,800 pounds, which means it can pull just about anything. Keep in mind that even a camper only weighs 5,200 pounds, so you won’t find the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel lacking. In fact, this towing capacity is most likely the best in its class. Even the legendary Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 can only tow up to 20,000 pounds.
You can also put that truck bed to work, as the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel also has a payload capacity of 3,940 pounds. You can even carry a motorboat on your truck if you can fit it inside, since a motorboat only weighs about 2,500 pounds.
With this payload capacity, you can carry a cubic yard of gravel (2,900 pounds), or 2.5 cubic yards of mulch (close to 4,000 pounds). You’re also able to carry ¾ cord of firewood, which weighs 3,750 pounds.
Driving the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel
This comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It works with a low redline, so with 10 gears available you certainly get a lot of gear shifting. But this won’t really bother you, as it shifts gears very subtly. In most cases, you may not even notice this.
This comes with lots of towing assistance features, and you’ll like most of them. The standard backup camera is terrific, and it really makes things easier when you’re hitching.
You may find that it feels stiff at first when you drive this pickup, but then that’s normal for heavy-duty pickup trucks in general. That’s especially true when you’re driving with an empty bed. But when you out this truck to work, somehow it feels more alive. Load the bed or hitch something to the pickup, and you get a ride that’s a lot smoother than what you’d expect.
Of course, even without a trailer the turning radius here is quite wide. But it’s not quite the lumbering beast that you get with other HD trucks. Turning this around cones doesn’t feel as cumbersome, and you only need very light steering.
At takeoff, you get a lot of torque and you can get to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds. But you won’t have any trouble modulating the throttle. You can sprint away cleanly, without melting your spinning tires. You can finish the quarter mile in just 15.1 seconds, at 91 mph.
As this sits quite high, you may want to get the optional chrome step up bar. But driving in this elevated cabin feels easy with a nice view. Your buddies at the back also have plenty of space.
You can get the FordPass Connect with 4G connectivity, along with the Co-Pilot 360 safety package that gives you the automatic emergency braking feature. There are lots of USB ports here, but you can also charge your phone wirelessly.
Admittedly, not everyone who gets the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel actually needs the fantastic payload and towing capacities of this heavy-duty pickup truck. It’s a bit like owning a diver’s watch rated for 300 meters when you never go diving and barely even go swimming. For some folks, it’s just that having that power available just makes them feel good.
But if you do need a heavy-duty pickup truck, the 2020 Ford F-250 Diesel is something worth considering. With this thing, you don’t just get the bragging rights. You can actually get things done.
