About Lexus RC
The Lexus RC 350 is a new coupe that is borne out of three different cars—the Lexus IS C, Lexus GS sedan, and the Lexus IS. It’s a relatively affordable Lexus car, the first truly reasonably priced coupe from the Toyota unit ever since its SC400 was pulled out of the market at the turn of the millennium.
Unlike the SC400, however, the new RC 350 coupe is geared towards drivers who demand impressive performance on the road instead of grand touring. It’s an attractive option for younger motorists who are looking for a four-passenger sports coupe. It is available in rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive. It competes against the Audi A5, Cadillac ATS Coupe, and the BMW 4 Series.
- Engine: 3.5 liter, V6
- Horsepower: 306 hp at 6400 rpm
- Torque: 277 pound-feet at 4800 rpm
- Fuel economy ratings: 19 mpg city driving, 28 mpg highway driving
- Transmission: Eight speed shiftable automatic
- Total seating: 4
- Drive train: Rear Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive
- 0-60: 5.7 seconds
There are actually two engine options for this coupe. The base engine is the 3.5 liter, V6 engine that churns out an impressive 306 horsepower and 277 pound feet of torque. With that power, the said car can zoom to 60 miles per hour in around six seconds. Power is transferred from the engine to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission for the rear wheel drive model, and six-speed automatic transmission for the all-wheel drive model.
If that engine is not too powerful enough, there’s the 5 liter V8 engine that produces 467 horsepower and enables the coupe to go from standstill to 60 miles per hour in a staggering 4.5 seconds. It also powers the coupe to zoom to a top speed of 170 miles per hour.
The coupe offers a very satisfying and sporty ride. Its suspension is designed to hug corners, making the car stiff on rough roads. But bring it on the highways and you’ll love how refined it is when on the move.
One particular feature that makes this car very enjoyable to drive is the G-sensor AI-shift control. It makes use of G-force sensor to determine which gear is the most appropriate for a certain period, when the car is shifted to Sport mode. This feature would be appreciated by novice and even experienced drivers when they are traversing curvy roads.
Interior and Equipment
The Lexus RC 350 interiors are quite snug. Technically speaking, the coupe can give seats to four passengers, but the rear is a bit cramped for adults. The sloping roof design is very attractive from afar, but when you go inside it really minimizes the head room of those seating at the back.
But the situation is a lot better up front. The seats are comfortable in terms of trims and bolster. There’s a seven inch display up front, a rounded dashboard, plus angled control interface for audio and climate.
Outside, the Lexus has a polarizing look that some motorists may not even recognize that it is a Lexus coupe. After all, the automaker has been known through the years for its conservative designs. But this time, the Toyota division has gone for a more appealing look with this RC coupe. The signature spindle grille of Lexus is still located up front, with twin tailpipes at the back and fins on the sides.
The RC 350 is equipped with automatic climate control, Siri Eyes Free iPhone integration, seven-inch display screen, and garage door opener. There is also a 10-speaker AM/FM/CD system with HD radio plus complimentary traffic and weather information. Also included in the car are dual USB inputs and Bluetooth integration.
If these features aren’t impressive enough, you can choose from the numerous enhancement options. You can add a navigation system with rearview camera, an Enform App suite that has services like Pandora, Yelp and stock prices, and a touch pad control.
You can also have the front seats heated/ventilated, or equip the interiors with leather. You can also have the steering wheel heated, or add moonroof to the coupe. Another upgrade is the Mark Levinson audio system that should satisfy even the most demanding of audiophiles.
Standard safety features include traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, and front knee airbags. There’s also the Enform Safety Connect onboard emergency system that integrates collision notification, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle locator.
The optional premium package also comes with blind spot monitoring, while the adaptive cruise control has collision mitigation system.
The new Lexus RC coupe has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $43,000. It is a few thousand dollars more expensive than the base BMW 4 series, and several thousand dollars cheaper than the Cadillac ATS Coupe.
