About Kia Sorento
If you are looking for an SUV that is big on style and comfort, you have to see the Kia Sorento. You can fit seven passengers inside its cabin comfortably.
Surprisingly, it is very affordable compared to other SUVs of the same class and style. Actually, the Kia Sorento gives you the best of both worlds. It is not quite on the heavy side of a regular SUV and it is not restricted by the diminutive size of a compact crossover.
So, if you are searching for a mid-size car, the Kia Sorento might be it.
Brief History of the Kia Sorento
Kia Motors of South Korea started producing this mid-size crossover SUV in 2002. Its first generation which lasted from 2002 to 2009 has undergone many upgrades through the years.
The second generation which was launched in 2009 and is still being produced today is considerably redesigned. This is the first Kia vehicle that was produced in the United States.
Production was done in the US$1 billion Kia manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia. This is where its sister vehicle Hyundai Santa Fe is also being manufactured.
The current model of Sorento uses Kia’s new corporate grille called the Tiger Nose. This car is no longer based on a truck frame. The latest Kia Sorento is now built using a unibody construction system.
If you will look at the most important specifications of the Kia Sorento, you might be tempted to consider it as your next car.
- Engine: 2.4 Liter, Inline 4 DOHC, 16-valve, Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), 191 hp. @ 6,300 rpm, 181 lb.-ft. @ 4,250 rpm of torque
- Transmission: Electronically Controlled 6-Speed Automatic Overdrive with Sportmatic transmission
- Steering: Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS)
- Drive train: Front Wheel Drive
- Brakes: 4-Wheel Disc with Antilock Braking System (ABS)
- Suspension: Front: MacPherson Struts, Gas Shock Absorbers; Rear: Independent, Multi-Link, stabilizer bar, Dual-Flow Damper Shock Absorbers
The base model of the Kia Sorento offers good handling and its power train delivers adequate power for its size. But the V6 version, with a bigger, stronger and more powerful engine, performs even better.
The four-cylinder version is quick most of the times. However, the V6 variation is even quicker and can go from 0 to 60 mph in around 7 seconds.
But you will have a smooth ride with the V 6 model, with its transmission working efficiently. This trim level is equipped with a sport-shift mode just off the shift lever. However, with its very responsive transmission system, you probably won’t need to use that often.
There is also a noticeable improvement on how the Sorento connects with the pavement compared to its previous version. This is due to the use of variable-effort electric power steering, more isolation in the suspension designs and additional bracing.
The base model with four cylinders is rated by the EPA at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles to the gallon on the highway with a combined rating of 23 mpg. However, in the 6 cylinder version, the mileage rating drops down to 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
These figures are not so different from the mileage rating of other car brands in its class. Therefore Sorento’s fuel efficiency is in line with the industry standards. It’s not remarkable, but it’s not faulty either.
The EPA rated the all-wheel-drive, four-cylinder Sorento at 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, with a combined 22 mpg. With a six-cylinder AWD, the rating is 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, and a combined 20 mpg.
The safety package of the Kia Sorento will make you confident about its ability to keep you safe. Both the IIHS and the NHTSA has given this car their top scores.
The Sorento earned five stars overall in NHTSA testing. Only a single four-star rollover-resistance rating prevented it from getting a perfect score. For its part, the IIHS awarded the Sorento mostly ‘good’ ratings.
The safety standard issues in the Kia Sorento include all the required airbags, an electronic stability system, a driver knee airbag, parking sensors and Bluetooth connectivity.
Comfort and Quality
A spacious cabin makes for a comfortable ride. This is what you will get with the Kia Sorento.
The Sorento was not as stylish before, but it underwent some needed transformation underneath and inside the cabin. Kia boasts that this current model is 80 per cent new. There is also a modest improvement in legroom space in the second and third rows.
Dramatic improvements were done in the dashboard and in the interior trim. But the good driving position is the one thing that Kia didn’t change. Together with the other improvements, your driving experience will be even more enjoyable inside the Kia Sorento.
