The Bentley Mulsanne Speed and the Mercedes-Maybach S600 are luxury limo cars that scream “excess” in every junction of their design and construction. These cars are second to none except to each other and this is why this comparative review exists in the first place.
Each car is unique in every way yet very similar to some extent which makes these cars very interesting. Both are made by respected car manufacturers that had extensive history with making cars for people who are into luxury and opulence. Read on and decide for yourself which one is better.
The Mercedes-Maybach S600 has the M275 AMG 6.0L twin turbo V12. This engine produces 523 horsepower and 612 ib-ft of torque for the S600. This allows the car to clock 0-60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. Not bad for a car that carries a lot of weight (around 5,308 Lbs).
The Bentley Mulsanne Speed on the other hand has a V8 engine that can push for 505 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque. The Speed’s 6,041-lbs weight is the reason why it lags behind the 0-60 mph figures clocked in at around 4.9 seconds. Although it is fractionally slower than the S600 it is important to note that the Bentley is 700 lbs heavier than the Mercedes-Maybach.
To better understand the need for these car’s seemingly oversized engines, one must consider the sheer size of these vehicles. These are not your typical sedans. The S600 is 220 inches long, just 10 inches shorter than a Ford 150 truck. The Speed on the other hand is 215 inches long. The engines therefore are just the right size.
The Driving Experience
In terms of driving these cars, the Maybach is the winner. This is because the S600 can deliver the goods when pushed hard, able to move around figure eights in a matter of 25.8 seconds compared to the 26.6 seconds clocked in by the bigger and heavier Bentley. But aside from these objective figures, the Bentley Mulsanne Speed handles better because of its more engaging driving characteristics.
It offers drivers a better feel of the road thereby making it more fun to drive. Yes, the S600 is quicker, lighter, and therefore more agile on the road but it also shelters the driver in such a way that driving is not just as fun. It must be remembered however that both cars can deliver luxury either way and in considering the thinking behind buying cars on this category, performance and driving experience are secondary. Luxury wins over performance.
As expected the Mercedes-Maybach S600 and the Bentley Mulsanne Speed boasts luxurious interiors. The Maybach succeeds in having an interior that impresses on first glance. Everything about its interior deserves a “wow”. Its longer wheelbase (3.9 inches to be exact) is playing out in the car’s interior as Maybach exploits this extra space to the hilt.
The rear seats can be folded nearly flat like a business class seat on jets. The legroom is more than enough. This is complimented with champagne flutes that are part of the aluminum tray tables that fold and hide neatly in the rear center console. Then there is of course the fridge that keeps 3 bottles of champagne. Everything in the back is powered and remote controlled.
The interior of the Bentley Mulsanne Speed on the other hand looks simpler and straightforward than that of the Maybach. But the rear quarters of the Speed is very deceiving. Only when you start poking around that you can discover the impressive design and workmanship of the car’s interior. It also has a remote control that allows passengers to control the heating, massage functions, and built-in screens that make this car an epitome of luxury.
Pressing a button at the rear part of the front seats will fold down leather-wrapped tray tables. Another button will reveal pop-up iPads with keyboards. A button in between the rear seats will reveal a fridge that has two bottles of champagne. The opulence of the rear quarters is a testament of Bentley’s commitment to luxury.
The Bentley Mulsanne Speed has a whopping price tag of $306,425. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 on the other hand costs around $190,275. Why the huge price difference in spite of the close comparisons of each car’s engine, interior, and drive? The answer lies in the level of luxury the cars afford its owners.
The Maybach, although quite impressive in every way, is practically a glorified Mercedes S- class. This is not a bad thing of course but when compared to Bentley Mulsanne, the latter is a standalone luxury vehicle, not a derivation of another well-made car. The leather in Mulsanne is better, the wood paneling more authentic, and the overall workmanship just above and beyond what the Maybach can provide.
