About Audi R8
Audi R8 was initially launched in 2007 after which it has received continuous improvement, a bit of re-designing here and there, and is once again gearing up to stage the latest release in 2016. The car was initially designed as a racing car by the German manufacturer, and later the company decided to launch another version as a sports car for the road.
The car has basically two models, the spyder and the coupe. The spyder is the roofless convertible design, whereas the coupe is the normal 2 door version. The mid-engined supercar is an all-wheel drive car powered by either a V8 or a V10 engine.
Based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform, the car is designed, developed and produced by the Quattro GhbH, which is a private subsidiary of Audi AG. It features an aluminum monocoque based on the Audi Space Frame design.
The first thing you will notice about the car is its exotic looks. The blades behind the doors are quite a contrast to its mid-engined style. The taillights, headlights, bumpers and actually the whole chassis have been upgraded quite a bit more than the earlier model.
One of the most impressive weight management tactics applied here is the use of aluminum in body. The car weighs surprisingly low for a modern supercar at just around 3,400 pounds.
Engine Specifications & Performance
Let’s take a look at the car’s performance and some of the engine specifications:
- The V8 4.2 L engine produces 430 hp @ 7900 rpm and 317 ft-lbs. @ 4500 rpm
- The V10 5.2 L engine produces 525 hp @ 8000 rpm and 391 ft-lbs. @ 6500 rpm
- The V8 engine is rated at 14 city/23 highway mpg, while the V10 at 13 city/22 highway mpg
- The fastest speed of Audi R8 is rated at around 186 mph
Advantages and Disadvantages
If you think of fuel economy, then this is not the car for you, as most sports cars are dedicated primarily to speed. It has some great balance that is distributed among the front and rear axles through an ultra smooth clutch.
An adaptive damper system referred to as the “Audi magnetic ride” is a feature of the suspension. At the front and back, the car also has aluminum double wishbones. Together these provide speedy yet smoother ride.
The R8 isn’t very spacious on the inside. Though the interior theme is well matched with the extravagant exterior, and styles can be accentuated with company-offered costly accessories, yet space at the front seats has been done quite oddly.
The MMI system for entertainment in the car has been positioned centrally above the dashboard, and can be controlled fully with voice commands, as reaching the controls with fingers is not always possible because of the positioning.
Audi R8 0-60 times are not as far as other supercars, however, the car is still relatively quick. If you are interested in buying an R8, don’t expect to have the fastest car on the drag strip.
